Nonvanishing Univalent Functions*

The class S of functions g(z) = z + c 2 z 2 + c 3 z 3 + ... analytic and univalent in the unit disk Izr < 1 has been thoroughly studied, and its properties are well known. Our purpose is to investigate another class of functions which, by contrast, seems to have been rather neglected. This is the class S o of functions f ( z ) = 1 + a 1 z + a 2 z Z + . . , analytic, univalent, and nonvanishing ...

Homotopy limits in type theory

Working in homotopy type theory, we provide a systematic study of homotopy limits of diagrams over graphs, formalized in the Coq proof assistant. We discuss some of the challenges posed by this approach to formalizing homotopy-theoretic material. We also compare our constructions with the more classical approach to homotopy limits via fibration categories.

Decoupling Limits in M - Theory

Limits of a system of N Dn-branes in which the bulk and string degrees of freedom decouple to leave a 'matter' theory are investigated and, for n > 4, either give a free theory or require taking N → ∞. The decoupled matter theory is described at low energies by the N → ∞ limit of n + 1 dimensional super Yang-Mills, and at high energies by a free type II string theory in a curved space-time. Met...

Theory of equilibrium shape of an anisotropically strained island: Thermodynamic limits for growth of nanowires

Using continuum elastic theory, we show that strain anisotropy removes the shape instability existing for an isotropically strained island. An anistropically strained island has always an anisotropic shape, elongating along the less-strained direction and adopting a narrow width in the more-strained direction. The sign of strain makes only a quantitative difference without changing the qualitat...

Seeing circles: what limits shape perception?

Humans are remarkably adept at judging shapes and discriminating forms. Forms and shapes are initially sampled by discrete localized visual filters (or receptive fields) in 'early' stages of visual processing. However, more complex higher level filters which integrate or pool information from many local filters may be needed to discern shapes. In order to understand the mechanisms that limit sh...
